This weekend I had the misfortune to see the entire of 2001: A Space Odyssey. This film has now entered my all time list of most boring films at number two.
I remember having seen the first 15 minutes or so before - I must have fallen asleep last time it was on. The remaining two hours only contain about 10 minutes of plot and consist mostly of:
- Scenes where nothing happens.
- Scenes where something or someone moves from somewhere to somewhere else extremely slowly.
- Entirely irrelevant scenes containing character development for characters who are only going to be in the film for a further five minutes.
- A completely blank screen with annoying noise pretending to be a sound track.
- A selection of 1 and 2 with annoying noise pretending to be a sound track.
- Solarized aerial photography of the Earth pretending to be somewhere near Jupiter.
I don’t think I’ll bother with the sequel.
In case you were wondering, my all time most boring film is The Thin Red Line. Although it has more action and plot than 2001, it is about half an hour longer so it remains number one for now.
Pah! It’s not that bad. You probably have to be in the right frame of mind to watch it though - its certainly not very explicitly stimulating in many places (the slowness of shots, etc). Not having seen it in a while I’m running from memory, but I seem to remember the slow pace giving you time to ‘experience’ and think about what was going on. Or perhaps that was just me. I do think that many films other people have found boring, I’ve found interesting because they’ve given me time to do a little thinking for myself about the plot / characters before shovel-feeding it to me, as it the way with many films.

2001? Boring?
Bu… but - Space!
Seriously; 2001 is a movie for space geeks.
And just as seriously, 2010 is about an order of magnitude better, and for normal people. But I can understand your reticence.
Yeah I agree!!!!
I finished watching 2001 and I was all like, WTF MAYTE???!
I have read all of the books and at least in those they could explain exactly what was going through the characters minds to fill in the 17 hours it took them to slowly drift through space to the final scene.
Later!
I have never seen 2001 but reading the above I think I would probably like it.
The most boring film of all time is the first Lord of the Rings film.
It was that bad. The most boring film of all time is 2001 A space … zzzzzzzzzz
snooze
I remember renting this on video as a kid when the ‘cool kid’ from primary school came over to stay (Mainly because my family had one of the early VCR’s - a rare thing in those days)
*sigh*
